Bed Bug Extermination Done Right

Bed bugs, unfortunately, have become a very common pest in our society. These nocturnal pests feed on the blood of mammals and since humans are the most accessible host that means they prefer us.

These pests are hitch-hikers, meaning that they can hitch a ride from anywhere and be brought back to our homes. There is truly no place that a bed bug can’t harbor. Some of the most common places are hotels, movie theaters, libraries, airports, shopping centers, apartment buildings, and health care facilities.

Adult bed bugs are about 3/16th of an inch in length and resemble a tick. They are brown to reddish and become redder in color after feeding. Their eggs are about 1mm in size and are whitish. Bed bug nymphs are very difficult to see with the naked eye. Most common places found in the home are in beds, bedding, pillows, and our favorite furniture (anywhere we sit or lie for extended times).

Bed bugs are not known to carry or spread diseases. The bite can, however, cause red welts that are normally in a line or cluster on the skin. They can become quite itchy. If irritated by scratching, it could cause an infection to occur that requires medical attention.

Bed bug treatments can range from the pillow and bed encasement, steaming, freezing, room heating and chemically treating. The method you choose is based on the type of infestation. Heat treatments are the fastest method for large infestations but can be quite expensive and leave residual killing power. Chemical treatments offer ongoing protection. It may take a little longer to eradicate the infestation as a whole, but it is the most common and most effective way of treatment.

Since bed bugs have become such a common pest and are found in a large variety of places, preventing infestations in our home has become a difficult task. Here are a few precautions you can take to lower the chances of bringing them home with you:

  • Hotel rooms are very common for infestations. You should always check your room for signs of bed bugs. What you want to look for are small spots of blood on mattresses or linens. As nymphs grow, they shed, leaving exoskeletons. These can be found in the box springs, nightstands, and in the crevices of furniture. The adults can be found in all the places above but most commonly found on the bed around the edging or piping of the mattress.
  • Keep suitcases, purses, bags, and loose clothing off the floor. When buying used furniture, inspect thoroughly and wash and clean appropriately. When returning home from a vacation, wash all clothing in hot water and place in dryer. It’s also a good idea to clean your luggage. A good vacuuming can save you a lot of trouble later.
  • Over the counter products typically don’t eliminate the problem but just suppresses it. It will always be cheaper and faster to cure a bed bug infestation through a professional exterminator.
