These social insects live in colonies. They are comprised of a queen and her workers. The workers forage for food to feed the colony and protect the queen. Ants typically colonize outside but can also nest indoors. They can usually be found around moist areas where food is readily available.
Ants are mostly a nuisance pest, aside from the carpenter ant which is capable of doing structural damage. Usually, a carpenter ant will leave wood shavings behind that brings attention to the homeowner before major damage occurs.
Treating the outside perimeter along the infested area is the most common treatment method. This can be done with gel-baits, traps, granules and environmentally-friendly chemicals.
